Old Abbotstonians 21-14 Old Grammarians
MAN of the match Dan Tuckwell's composure and excellent kicking performance helped Old Abbotstonians secure a valuable 21-14 win against Old Grammarians on Saturday.
The Hayes side made hard work of it in the first half, unable to secure enough ball and mostly camped in their own half. To make matters worse, continual infringements gave the visitors two easy penalties in front of the posts and a half time lead of 6-0
However, the second half was completely different, with Abbots playing with renewed vigour, discipline and greater ball control.
Having secured a quick penalty in the visitors' 22 and passing rapidly down the line and, the move was finished by Kyle Buckingham and converted by front row forward Tuckwell.
Grammarians responded with another penalty, and with all to play for, the next 10 minutes saw both sides take attack and defence to all areas of the pitch.
But when the opportunities presented themselves, it was Abbots who were quicker to capitalise, Liam McPherson grabbing their second try which was again converted by Tuckwell.
With 12 minutes to go, Grammarians missed a penalty and had a player sin binned for dangerous play, giving Abbots the ability to control the tempo of the game.
It also created the space for a charge down try by Tuckwell, which he once more converted, meaning the hosts still had some breathing space when Grammarians pulled back an unconverted try.
Meanwhile, in the same division, Ickenham moved out of the relegation zone with a 19-7 win over Pinner & Grammarians.
