BRUNEL University canoeist Jonathan Boyton will be bidding for international glory next weekend after his qualification for the European Championships.
Selectors last week confirmed the 21-year-old's spot in the GB senior squad for Tarasona, Spain, after his impressive showing at a World Cup event.
Boyton and partner Ed Rutherford will now be paddling for gold in the championships on July 2-4 after they defeated their compatriot rivals to qualify for the K2 (doubles) 1,000m final.
“The World Cup was basically a race-off with other GB crews to qualify for the European Championships,” said Boyton. “They also looked at our results internationally and they were happy with us after we reached the final.”
A strong performance in Spain would give Boyton a good chance of securing a berth at the World Championships in Poland later this summer.
After an in-form season, Boyton is optimistic of success.
'We are currently in a block of heavy training for the event and the boat is running better than ever,' he said.
