Students pocket a lucky 13 gongs at university event

BRUNEL University students secured 13 medals at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Outdoor Athletics Championships over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The talented bunch earned a haul of six golds, three silver and four bronze medals at the Bedford international stadium.

Second year physiotherapy student Emma Pallant, 19, was the star, winning the 1,500m (4:24.34) shortly after coming second in the 5,000m. She said: "I'm pleased that the 5,000m was first because I knew it would be tough." Emma also won the gold in the 3,000m indoor championships in March.

Joey (Jacqueline) Duck won the 100m (11.65); women's captain Tara Bird strode to gold in the 800m in 2:07.19; Stephanie Smith won the pole vault with a leap of 3.70m and Claire Linskill won the triple jump (12.61 m).

In the men's team, Chris Hughff achieved a new championship and personal best in the javelin with a throw of 76.92m.
