Smillie secures first goal and point against Yate

ZAMARETTO LEAGUE SOUTH & WEST Yate 1 Uxbridge 1

JACK Smillie's first goal of the season saw Uxbridge claim a deserved point from their trip to Yate on Saturday.

The midfielder cracked home a spectacular free-kick on 31 minutes to give the reds a half-time lead, and although the hosts levelled after the break, this was another encouraging result for Tony Choules' side coming on top of their midweek win over Andover.

Yate had the better of the early skirmishes but visiting keeper Michael Watson did well to foil first Adie Adams and then Liam Fussell.

Mark Dennison's free-kick held by Josh Dempsey was the closest Uxbridge came to scoring early on, but Smillie showed his team-mate the route to goal just beyond the half-hour, cracking his dead-ball effort beyond the Yate custodian's reach.

The hosts grabbed the equaliser 11 minutes after half-time thanks to a header from their skipper Mark Hughes which gave Watkins no chance.

Smillie, Lee Tunnell and Dave Thomas all spurned chances to win it for Uxbridge, but they were hanging on at the end following a spate of late corners and free-kicks by the home side.
