HARRY Redknapp admits QPR were so outclassed in the first half, that his only aim was to limit the damage in the second half.
The Rangers boss withdrew Djibril Cisse from the attack at the interval and brought on Shaun Derry to shore up midfield and close the game down, because he felt chasing the game would have been futile and potentially embarrassing.
“At half time, would you have said we're going to win 4-3? You have to be realistic in football. Do want to get beaten 8-0, or are you going to come out and try and keep a little bit of pride intact, work hard second half?
“Damage limitation it's called and that was the situation I was in. It's not a nice situation, but that's what I had to do. I had to change the way we played and try to shut up shop.
“Maybe I should have done it from the start. I've come here today thinking we need a win, so we played an open team, but at 3-0, you're thinking this could be seven or eight here if we're not careful, just like Chelsea got the other day.
“They could have got 10 or 11 against Aston Villa and I didn't that happening today. But you could see it coming when they went three up. We got a little bit of pride back.”
Redknapp said it was the first time since he arrived at Loftus Road that Rangers were not at the races and basically overrun.
“Second half, I thought we did OK, we worked much harder, but they had better quality than we had everywhere and it was a very difficult day,” said the Hoops boss.
“You look at the quality of their players. One club spent nearly 200 million quid on their players.
“They've got different quality players and we couldn't get near them, first half an hour. They ran us ragged. They were too good for us. Their movement was so good, we found it hard to get near them.
“Today was the first time that we haven't been in the game. We drew the first three, then we won, then we got beaten by the odd goal twice, but today, I'm afraid, their team was on a different level to us, in all honesty. It wasn't a lack of effort, we just couldn't get near them.
“People don't seem to understand, it's different levels. I felt we tried.”
