HAYES & YEADING went down fighting after they were relegated from the Blue Square Premier despite Piero Mingoia's second-half strike earning victory at Lincoln City.
Newport's home win over Alfreton Town meant United’s three-year stay in the non-league top flight came to end at Sincil Bank this afternoon having spent the whole of 2012 in the relegation zone.
The travelling United faithful were dealt an early blow when Nas Bashir was forced to switch first-choice winger Luke Williams for Aristede Bassele in the first-half.
Reliable midfielder Mark Bentley then went close for the visitors with a low drive that whistled past the post before former United hitman Jefferson Louis saw his shot well saved by Steve Arnold.
Pele should have given Bashir's men the lead just before the before the break but he headed skipper Jamie Hand's inswining corner wide of Joe Anyon's goal.
The United players would have seen the disheartening score at Newport during the interval but came out all guns blazing in the second-half and Mingoia struck on the hour to put them in front.
Lincoln substitute Conner Robinson tested Arnold late on but the United were not to be denied their victory, although there little reason to celebrate as Hand was given a straight red card seconds before the final whistle.
The result sees United return to the Blue Square South next season after a three-season exodus following the club’s promotion via the play-offs in 2009.
However, Blue Square Premier football will be played at Kingfield next season after United’s groundshare partners Woking won promotion earlier this month.
