Hayes & Yeading 1 - Grimsby Town 2
JAMIE Hand's penalty came too late for Hayes & Yeading to mount a comeback as they were beaten by ten-man Grimsby this evening.
Hand scored an 87th minute spot kick after Anthony Church had been given his marching orders for hauling down substitute Julian Owusu.
But goals either side from Rob Duffy and Shaun Pearson had already done the damage and ensured United remained in the Blue Square Premier drop zone tonight.
Former United midfielder Louie Soares had to settle for a place on the Grimsby bench on his return to Kingfield as Nas Bashir's men looked to continue their recent improvement.
Grimsby went close early on as Michael Coulson's cross found Duffy in acres of space at the back post but the Mariners striker's downward header crashed against the foot of the post.
And the visitors went close again minutes later, Duffy fooling the United defence with a clever dummy to free Anthony Elding whose shot was always curling slightly away from the upright.
United recovered and started to work their way back into the match with Daniel Wishart causing problems down the left flank and Hand's deflected 25-yard drive working James McKeown.
But it was the Mariners who took the lead as the game reached the half-hour mark as Hayes & Yeading failed to clear their lines and amid the confusion the ever-alert Duffy pounced to force in the opener.
As half-time approach Coulson attacked down the right hand side once more, again finding Duffy in the middle, however the striker's bundled finish was chalked off for a foul on a covering United defender.
The Mariners continued to press after the break and doubled their lead before the hour, Pearson heading Peter Winn's outswinging corner past Steve Arnold and into the far corner of the net.
Bashir threw on Pele and Owusu in an attempt to inject a bit more attacking flair to the United attack, which had been lacking in creativity but certainly no lack of endeavour from the industrious Hand.
However, the skipper's exertions had left him shattered and his passing became laboured as he tried to find on-loan Millwall hitman Aiden O'Brien, who had looked isolated up front before the introduction of Owusu.
And Owusu won a late penalty for the hosts with less than five minutes remaining after he was hauled down by last-man Church, who was given a straight red card by referee Justin Aimey.
United captain Hand dispatched the penalty with confidence but the breakthrough came to late for Bashir's side who ran out of time to rescue the points at Kingfield.
