YASSIN Moutaouakil has revealed he was the subject of interest from Championship outfit Millwall in the summer.
The Hayes and Yeading defender was approached by a representative of the Lions and invited to attend a trial at The Den.
Moutaouakil never turned out for Millwall and now finds himself down the pecking order at United following the arrival of Calum Butcher in September.
“I had Millwall come in for me,” said the 26-year-old. “I had someone call me and tell me to come on trial at Millwall. I didn’t go because someone told me that there was somewhere else I might be able to go but that didn’t happen. That’s why I didn’t go.”
Moutaouakil, who once cost Millwall’s rivals Charlton Athletic £400,000, carried an ankle injury into the new season and that allowed Butcher to step in.
The former French U21 star has been impressed by United’s new full-back but has his sights set on forcing his way back into Nas Bashir’s first-team plans.
“I had an ankle injury that I carried into the new season but I got fit and played the first few games,” he said. “We played away [at Havant and Waterlooville] and I had a knock on the same ankle. So I asked to be put on the bench because I wasn’t fit but now I am
ready to play and have just been on the bench because other people have come in and we need to give them a chance.
“Me being on the bench – I don’t want to say it doesn’t bother me, but it is more important that the team wins. I know I’ve got the quality and the CV – I will keep working hard. I think everybody deserves to play. Calum is a young lad who has worked hard and deserves his chance.”
Moutaouakil came off the bench in the dying moments of United’s recent 3-2 win over Farnborough.
He believes United can be pleased with the positive start they have made to life in the Blue Square South and has heaped praise on boss Bashir.
“The manager did some great work this year and built a really ood team with players like Sam Cox, my friend Kudus [Oyenuga] and Josh Ekim,” he said. “These are the kind of players that can take the team higher.”
Moutaouakil is expected to return to the starting line-up in Saturday’s trip to Eastleigh as he comes into the team for the suspended Tom Cadmore.
