Mother accused of killings remanded

A mother accused of stabbing her son and daughter to death at their home has appeared in court.

Sasikala Navaneethan, of Park Lane, Carshalton, south London, is accused of murdering five-year-old Shanjayan and four-year-old Sharani in May. The 36-year-old is also charged with the attempted murder of another child, who survived the attack.

She was remanded in custody by magistrates in Sutton, and will next appear at the Old Bailey on January 13.

Neighbours reported seeing the children, covered in blood, carried from the house late at night on May 30.

Navaneethan and her 40-year-old husband, who are thought to be from the Tamil area of Sri Lanka, were arrested.

He was later released.
