TEENAGE glider pilot Jessica Taylor took to the skies and flew solo for the first time – much to her surprise.
The 16-year-old, a sixth form student at Bishopshalt School in Uxbridge, piloted the glider unaided on Saturday last week at Oxford Gliding Club, in Weston on the Green, after being winched up to 2,000 feet.
Miss Taylor, from Church Road, Cowley, said: “I didn’t know I’d be going on my own until my instructor told me just before.
“It was quite scary being on my own, but it went well. If you forget something or anything happens while you’re up there, there’s no one there to help and you have to think quickly.”
She has attended the club most weekends since she was a young child, and had trained with an instructor for the past two years. Jessica's dad, Barry, is also a member and teacher at the club.
She added: “My friends know that I do it, and they think I am quite brave.”
