A new breast screening clinic has opened in Uxbridge
A NEW breast screening clinic has opened in Uxbridge, and women are being urged to get a check-up while out shopping.
The specialist unit at Uxbridge Health Centre in Chippendale Waye was opened on Thursday last week by local wellbeing author, Julia Hague.
The service, commissioned by the Hillingdon Primary Care Trust and being run by the West of London Breast Screening Service, will replace the mobile screening vans previously used.
The clinic will be open 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday, and on Saturday mornings once a month. The hours can be flexible to accommodate evening consultations.
All screenings require booking in advance but it is hoped its location – near Uxbridge town centre and The Chimes shopping centre – will encourage women to combine shopping trips with appointments.
Miss Hague said: “Women should always take their health into their own hands.
“Most women who don’t attend breast screening are afraid of what might be found. If they only realised that when they are screened they only find peace of mind or professional help.”
The new facility contains a digital mammography machine using lower radiation doses to acquire images, and makes it easier and quicker to locate any breast abnormalities.
Ellis Friedman, joint director of public health in Hillingdon, said: “For the service to work we have to get women to come, so we can offer them the care they deserve.
“This clinic, with its modern facilities, will allow us to provide a high quality, responsive and accessible service that will be much more convenient and flexible.”
Dr Trish Hurton, a clinical commissioning group board member, added: “An early diagnosis of breast cancer means a better chance of survival.
“It is important that women attend regular breast screening checks as screening can detect breast cancer early, when it is too small for you or your doctor to see or feel.”
Compared to the rest of the country, women in London are the least likely to attend their screenings. In Hillingdon, about two thirds go to their appointments.
