Ruislip Lido 2
Closed-circuit cameras are to be put up around Ruislip Lido toilets as a matter of urgency to deter men from engaging in sexual activities in public.
Last month, the Gazette reported that a reader who lives nearby was worried about anti-social behaviour in the block close to the lido entrance in Reservoir Road.
The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said she and her neighbours had spoken to their Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) about the evidence of sexual activity in an area regularly visited by families with young children.
According to the caller, a man had been arrested and cautioned in September for indecent exposure in a car parked near the lido entrance, although the police had no record of this. She said she and others had witnessed indecent exposure.
After the publication of the story, Hillingdon Council closed the toilet block, next to The Waters Edge pub, which had been vandalised with graffiti which suggested that people were making assignations there.
Councillor Ray Puddifoot said the council had planned to install CCTV on completion of improvement work at the lido, but this has been brought forward.
Mr Puddifoot, leader of the council, said: In view of the anti-social behaviour at these toilets, we are going to install the CCTV ahead of the building work.
We have already put in lighting and mobile CCTV on the road side of the lido, next to the pub, as well as the repair work to the toilets. We are now in the process of putting lighting and mobile CCTV at the toilets on the other side of the lake [next to the artificial beach].
Improvements to the popular beauty spot, which include a new cafm, shop and woodland centre next to Ruislip Lido Railways Woody Bay station, are due to begin next month.
Jean Palmer, the councils director of community services, said officers were working with the SNT to combat this unacceptable behaviour.
The council will not tolerate any behaviour which is illegal, anti-social or causes distress to members of the public, and as such is taking reports of anti-social behaviour at the lido very seriously, she said.
