Forbuoys, in Kingshill Avenue, Hayes, after thieves ripped water pipes from the empty flat above, causing massive water damage
A NEWSAGENTS was flooded after burglars tried to rip out water pipes to sell the metal.
The thieves broke into the empty flat above Forbuoys, in Kingshill Avenue, Hayes, in the early hours of Monday last week, and attempted to take the copper piping and water tanks.
They left empty-handed, but the shop’s workers arrived later that morning to find water streaming from the ceiling, which had fallen through in places, and was puddling on the shop floor.
The water damaged the tills and some of the stock, valued at hundreds of pounds and staff had to close for the day while the mess was cleaned up.
The shop is now open as normal but more repairs are needed.
“There are three other newsagents on this road – our competition – so it’s bad for business to close for a day,” said branch manager Gobinath Thambarja. “It was lucky that it didn’t happen earlier that night and we caught it just a few hours later, otherwise the damage would have been a lot worse. All of this was done just for a bit of metal, it’s crazy.
“People need to know that this happens, and they should protect their homes if they are going on holiday or leaving it empty for a period of time.”
No arrests have been made.
