THE Middlesex Town and County Show, held at the Middlesex Showground site in Uxbridge on 85 separate years, has been cancelled due to concerns over the traveller community.
In its heyday the event attracted over 40,000 people and even last year around 14,000 attended, and this year it was set to take place over the weekend of June 19-20. Only briefly did the event stop when nobody was running it, and it was recently resurrected.
A statement on organisers HD Fairs website, said: "We had security breaches in 2008 and 2009 by an undesirable element of the travelling community which resulted in an attempted raid last year.
"Attempts at securing this situation, while hopeful at first, have now failed making the security of the event out of proportion to the event as a whole."
The organisers added they were 'devastated' and hoped the annual event would not be lost forever.
The site is located in Park Road, Uxbridge, and on Saturday a group of travellers swooped with over 25 caravans to claim it as their own. Hillingdon Council have been frantically trying to move them on and have had partial success.
If the travellers situation is unresolved, then another popular event which could be at risk is the Uxbridge Autoshow, again attended by thousands, scheduled for July 19 this year, although it is likely the site will be clear by that time.
