RELENTLESS snow has brought rush hour traffic to a stand-still in Northwood and Rickmansworth, with delays on public transport and schools closed.
Although emergency services have reported a quiet night, the ongoing icy conditions have caused hold-ups on treacherous roads, many of which have not been gritted.
Hertfordshire County Council, which is responsible for salting, was forced to reduce its operation on Monday (January 11), after the Government ordered local authorities to scale back by up to 50 percent.
Stuart Pile, executive member for highways and transport, said teams are continuing to grit main roads as well as routes providing access to essential emergency services including hospitals and fire stations.
Mr Pile added: "We know this is likely to have an impact on people and businesses and ask everyone to be very careful when travelling.
"We don't like having to cut back on our routes. However, we recognise its inevitability in the face of the continued national salt shortage, and the reduced quantities of salt, that we are getting through central government's 'Salt Cell' system."
Three Rivers District Council has also been informed it can collect a further 10 tonnes of sand/salt mix for use on the pavements, which is also suitable for filling salt bins.
Meanwhile on the rails, minor tube delays have been reported on Metropolitan line between Croxley Green and Watford, due to a signal failure at Moor Park.
And many schools have been forced to close early or not to open at all, with children and staff unable to travel in the arctic weather.
The following schools are closed:
Eastbury Farm JMI & Nursery in Northwood
Merchant Taylors' School in Northwood
Frithwood Primary School in Northwood
Christ Church C of E School in Rickmansworth
Rickmansworth Park JMI in Rickmansworth
Malvern Way Infant & Nursery School in Croxley Green
Those due to close early include:
Harvey Road Primary in Croxley Green (due to close at 2pm)
Little Green Junior School in Croxley Green (open to walkers only)
