Service must not be removed

I GATHER that the London Borough of Hillingdon is considering closing the information and enquiry desk within the central library in Uxbridge.

For the last 10 years I have used this enquiry service, which is staffed by experienced and efficient librarians - I believe they handle some 600 enquiries per week.

Can Councillor Henry Higgins explain who will handle these requests for information should the service cease?

Many of the enquirers are some of the most vulnerable members of our society - perhaps homeless people or victims of domestic violence.

What consultation with the library users is proposed for these important changes?

If people are concerned I suggest they write to Henry Higgins at the Civic Centre, High Street, Uxbridge.

PAUL JACKSON,

Bridge Road, Uxbridge.
