OUR search for outstanding people who make a fantastic contribution to the community begins with the launch of the Local Heroes awards 2012 by the Uxbridge Gazette and Leader in association with Uxbridge College.
This annual competition – the 10th – recognises the incredible bravery, commitment and dedication shown by unsung heroes across the borough.
Anyone who lives, works or volunteers in Hillingdon is eligible to be nominated in one of five categories: Outstanding Young Person, Star Carer, Courageous Citizen, Fabulous Fundraiser or Community Champion.
An overall Hero of Hillingdon award will be given to the category winner whom the judges feel most deserves the accolade.
If you know someone who deserves credit for doing a good deed, nominate them by filling in the form on this page or online at www.uxbridgegazette.co.uk/heroes.
The closing date for entries is Friday, June 8 at 5.30pm and the judging panel will make its selections shortly afterwards.
Shortlisted nominees will be invited to a gala evening to be held at the Hayes Community Campus in Coldharbour Lane, Hayes on Thursday, July 12.
Each category winner will receive a trophy and £200 cash, while the Hero of Hillingdon will win a further £500 and trophy. Runners-up will each receive £50.
Last year, the title of Hillingdon Hero went to 10-year-old Kane Thomas of Freemans Lane, Hayes, who took care of his mum, Roma, after she became ill with Bell’s Palsy.
His proud mum said: “It was wonderful that he won the award – it was a terrible time when I was ill but Kane was so good. It was great that he was recognised by the community for all his hard work.”
Uxbridge College prinicipal, Laraine Smith, said: “We are very proud to be joining the Uxbridge Gazette and Leader again for this year’s Local Heroes competition.
“Our community is at the heart of everything we do here at Uxbridge College, and this special event offers a wonderful chance to recognise some of its unsung heroes.”
Gazette news editor Alan Hayes added: “Local Heroes always produces a wealth of fascinating and inspirational stories which we love to tell.
“Please, take this opportunity to make sure a true, unsung hero gets the recognition they deserve.”
