Nick Ross Orchestra
JOURNEY down memory lane and recapture the sounds of a bygone era as The Nick Ross Orchestra presents an spectacular evening of music and song at the Beck Theatre next Sunday (29).
Sounds of the Glenn Miller Era, a special one-off matinee concert, pays homage to the Big Band sound of the 1940s, as well as marking the 70th anniversary of The Blitz.
With a full line-up of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, a rhythm section and first class singers, The Nick Ross Orchestra promises to faithfully recreate the sublime sounds of Big Bands led by the likes of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Harry James and Tommy Dorsey.
Musical arrangements are exactly as recorded during the Great Swing Era of the 1940s, coupled with outstanding instrumental and vocal performances.
And with numbers such as Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, A String of Pearls, Begin the Beguine and a Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, memories of London during the Blitz are sure to come flooding back.
The music will encompass almost all the emotions people experienced during times of wartime hardship, from comradeship and camaraderie, doubt, fear and loss, to perhaps most significantly, the hope in love.
There will be those who watch and listen or tap a shy finger to the melodies, while others follow with a silent foot-beat, murmur softly through the lyrics or simply allow themselves a fleeting smile. But common to all are memories.
History has seen composers and musicians almost born for occasions, with none more so than the inimitable Glenn Miller, who not only felt instinctively for the mood of the time, but almost single-handedly created the spirit with which the public faced their troubles.
The Nick Ross Orchestra's extensive library also features Ted Heath, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, Les Brown, Benny Goodman, Ray Noble and Stan Kenton, among others.
And of course, no Big Band repertoire would be complete without reference to the song books of Ol' Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald.
The Nick Ross Orchestra presents Sounds of the Glenn Miller Era at the Beck next Sunday (29) at 5pm and tickets cost £18 (concessions £17). For further information and to book, call the box office on 020 8561 8371 or visit www.becktheatre.org.uk
